The Dangers of Hiking in Rain

Sometimes it rains and you don’t want to cancel your hiking plans so you go anyway. This can be dangerous and without proper planning can end in you or your hiking companions getting injured. The following are some tips for properly hiking when it rains outside.

Waterproofing

Make sure that you use waterproof clothing such as raincoats and other gear that will allow rain to slide off of you instead of soaking into your clothing. Once your clothing gets wet it will often stay wet. This will subject your body to colder temperatures and increase your chances of coming down with an illness. If you only have a bag that isn’t waterproof, you can use a garbage bag as a liner so that the insides don’t get wet. In waterproof clothing it is important that it has some form of ventilation so that you can let heat and moisture escape.

Bring Layers

In warmer climates it may be nice to walk in the rain without a lot of gear on. However, if the weather changes or the sun starts to set you can become cold quickly. Put some more layers on such as sweatshirts and other clothing to keep your body heat in. If it is still somewhat warm out you’re going to want to hike at a slower pace so that you don’t overheat.

Taking Breaks

If you’re hiking in the rain, breaks become an important time to regroup and store up some energy. If the rain lets up, use this time as a break. During your break make sure to eat and drink to replace anything you’ve burnt off during your hike. This is also a good time to get anything out of your bags that you may need but don’t want to get wet.

Keep Your Feet Dry

Rain pants are an important item in preventing water from finding its way into your shoes. They will direct the water past your legs and over the outside of your boots. Making sure that you also have waterproof boots that are designed for the climate that you are hiking in is important. They need to have enough traction so that they won’t slip on rocks that are wet from the rain.

Wet Socks

Make sure to pack dry socks so that if you are hiking for an extended period of time you can exchange them with your wet ones. Wet socks can cause a variety of foot problems including various foot fungi and blisters. If you have a break in the weather where it is dry you will want to take off your wet socks and hang them from a tree branch so that they can begin to dry in the sun. When you get ready to start hiking put them in a plastic bag so they won’t get the other things in your bag wet.

 

Rock Slides

The risk of a rock slide or even land side are extremely high during the rain. Water loosens the mountains and mud making the land more likely to slide out from underneath you. This is never something you can predict as there are many factors that could be added to the problem to make it more likely. Your own body weight might be the very thing that piece of land needed to fall. Take extra precaution by trying to stick to roads and not venturing off on new trails. Or you can take the even safer route of waiting till the rains ends and the land has time to dry. IMG_8491
